What is the intention of our Personal Development Curriculum?
Personal development includes: Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE).
At Hillingdon Primary School we value Personal Development. Learning is not left to chance and teaching and learning begins in the Nursery. The subject content underpins our school’s values and ethos: 'Learning and Achieving Together.' We recognise that a child’s personal development lays the foundations for a successful education: ‘to enable each child to discover the joy of learning, to help them fulfil every aspect of their potential and to encourage their growth into effective and happy citizens, with a strong sense of their own agency, ready to play their part in the World and in their community.’
Hillingdon Primary School Curriculum Intent / Vision and Values
We use Jigsaw, a planned programme of learning as a core part of our personal development curriculum. The programme provides a framework to ensure that we meet statutory requirements. The programme also significantly contributes to the school’s Safeguarding and Equality Duties; British Values; and the SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development opportunities provided to our pupils.
Personal Development is assessed regularly to ensure a good pace of progress for all pupils as they move through the curriculum. The Inclusion and Pastoral Care Team work closely with teachers, parents and families of pupils who find this area of study particularly challenging. Interventions are in place to support and develop their social and emotional needs.

Personal Development Curriculum
Our pupils are taught through an explicit, spiral and progressive curriculum that has been coherently and carefully planned. It is taught in half-termly whole school themes. The table below shows the whole school approach from Early Years (EYFS) to Year 6. It gives the learning theme of each of the six units and these are taught across the school; the learning deepens and broadens every year. EYFS Learning goals of Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development and Understanding the World are embedded within the spiral curriculum.
