Governance of our school 

While the Trustees hold ultimate legal responsibility for the governance of all Elliot Foundation schools, each academy benefits from its own Academy Community Council (ACC). Although ACCs are advisory bodies, with no delegated authority, Councillors play a vital role in connecting each academy, its staff, and its pupils to the wider community. This involvement supports our statutory duty to listen to and work alongside parents, carers, and local stakeholders. 

Councillors are essential to fostering collaboration and celebrating the achievements of our local communities. They ensure that parents and carers feel well-informed and have meaningful opportunities to engage in improving the experience of our pupils. 

Full details regarding decision making are set out in our scheme of delegation. Accountability for educational outcomes, budgets, estates, compliance and HR lies with the Principal, Operations Group and Trust Board.

The Board maintains a direct link with each school's council through the Company Secretary, who serves as the primary point of contact for governance matters. Chairs of the ACCs meet three times each academic year at a dedicated Chairs’ Forum, facilitating face-to-face feedback that strengthens communication between the local councils and the Trustees.

Our Community Council

Community Councils are a formal part of the Trust’s governance structure. They are advisory bodies who:

1. Ask: Capture the diverse perspectives of our school community.
2. Listen: Demonstrate that we listen to everyone in our school community.
3. Act: Advise the school and Trust on how to turn feedback into positive action.
4. Check: Uphold fairness and policy standards in complaints and exclusion panels.

Community councillors are a valued group of volunteers that play a crucial role in our school offering challenging but respectful, positive and proactive support to school leaders on behalf of the children and community that the school serves. They know and celebrate the strengths of the community that the school serves alongside holding the highest aspirations and expectations for our pupils. 

Community councillors are appointed from current parents, staff and committed individuals from the wider community. The principal is automatically a member of the group.

We ask our councillors to attend three meetings per year, which works out to one per term. These are typically held during school hours and incorporate a school visit to enable councillors to meet with pupils and staff to gain a good understanding of the school, its community, and its culture. 

There are additional opportunities to participate in important activities, such as by attending events and supporting specific projects that may be underway.
